Is a vasectomy right for me?
A vasectomy should be thought of as permanent. If you might want to have children in the future, or you aren't sure yet, it's worth waiting. We'll talk it through with you before you decide.
What to expect
- The procedure is done in our office using local anesthesia.
- It usually takes about 30 minutes.
- Before you go home, we'll explain how to take care of yourself as you recover and when to call us.
It doesn't work right away
After a vasectomy, you'll need to keep using another form of birth control until a follow-up semen test shows there are no sperm. We'll tell you when to bring in samples, and we'll let you know when it's safe to stop using other birth control.
Common concerns
Many men worry that a vasectomy will affect their sex drive or performance. The procedure does not change the body's production of male hormones. If you have questions about this, Dr. Walton is happy to talk with you privately.
